sophiabush Nothing else to add here ... though I really wish I’d had flyers of this exchange printed out to hand out to all the folks refusing to wear masks in LA this weekend, though that would’ve compromised responsible physical distancing. Ugh. HEALTHCARE WORKERS AND FOOD SERVICE WORKERS ARE DYING — at disproportionate numbers to the rest of us!! — SO PUT ON A GD MASK, Karen. It’s literally the least you can do. There is nothing hard about it. Your freedoms aren’t being infringed on. You’re being asked to do your part, which you should jump at since you claim to love your country. Or does that not apply across the board? Because if it DOES ... wait for it ... MASK UP. Oh, and science is real. Period. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. #ProtectHealthcareWorkers #ProtectFoodServiceWorkers #MaskingForAFriend image c/o @themakeuppapi
sophiabush On today’s @workinprogress, I’m joined by @meghanrienks. We talk about her new book — #YoureNotSpecial — what it was like to start her #youtube channel at 16, mental health, bullying, her love of #OTH (and duh, mine too), and much more. “I’m not the things that have happened to me, but that’s molded who I am as a person...I am who I am because of them and also in spite of them,” she said. Amen!! #WIPsmart #WorkInProgress
sophiabush This week @samanthamarq and I got #wild. (Keeping the creative commitment going, despite how mad the world feels right now.) Thankful for nature and for my best gal who pushes me to take risks. Love you MA’AM! #wildfleur

sophiabush On today’s @workinprogress, I’m joined by Dr. Risa Hoffman. She holds a Masters in Public Health from Harvard and an MD from UCLA. Her work as an infectious disease specialist feels incredibly timely at the moment. Focusing on health outcomes for women with HIV through the Care Center at UCLA, means she’s worked here in LA, in Malawi, Africa, and alongside Dr. Fauci — hello super relevant right now! — on battling infectious disease. She told me that she never imagined witnessing a pandemic in our lifetime, but here we are, and she finds herself amazed by doctors and researchers around the world right now. COVID-19 “has really pulled people together [globally] in ways that I think we haven’t [seen] … It’s a really positive thing and I think we can see that we benefit so much by having all those voices at the table.”
•
Dr. Hoffman walks me through her path to becoming an infectious disease specialist, her work and research to optimize care for HIV-infected women, how treatments are made, what we should know about #coronavirus, what vaccines really do, and more. You don’t want to miss this one. #WorkInProgress #WIPsmart #WIPsmarties #COVID19
sophiabush Some good news. Made it official with Maggie!! Thanks to the team at The Animal Rescue Mission @theanimalrescuemission for bringing this ball of sunshine into my life. She’s such a love. ♥️🌾
•
And thanks to my sweet momma for socially distant backyard meet ups, so Maggie can get to know her brother Griff while he rehabs with my folks, away from the staircases at my house that were slowing his ACL surgery recovery process. How lucky we are to be close, even when we’re far ♥️🐾 #AdoptDontShop #MaggieMagpie
sophiabush I woke up thinking about Wanda Cooper Jones today. She is #AhmaudArbery’s mother. It’s #MothersDay. Her son was born on Mother’s Day in 1994. This past Friday he would have turned 26. But Wanda’s son will only ever be 25. I can’t stop thinking about the reality that she is living now. A waking nightmare. I do not know her. I did not know her son. I do not have a son. I have no clue what it feels like to lose one. Yet here I am, feeling sick, in tears, at a loss for words. In trying to find some, I instead found @michele__norris’. I will link to her op-ed in my stories. Please read it today. Honor Wanda. Honor your mother by honoring her. Do not look away.
•
Here is an excerpt from Norris’ searing piece:
“Just in time for Mother’s Day, Wanda Cooper-Jones had joined a sorority no woman wants any part of. Her youngest son was shot during a Sunday afternoon jog back in February by two men who looked at him and saw a monster.
She will get a lot of attention this Mother’s Day. But not the kind she is accustomed to. Not the sweet and earnest gestures from a loving son: a card, some flowers, maybe some lopsided pancakes on a breakfast-in-bed tray. Her day will be filled instead with grief and rage. A hole in her heart and an empty chair at the table... With Ahmaud’s senseless death, Wanda Cooper-Jones joined the group of grieving black women whose sons’ and daughters’ names have turned into grief-soaked hashtags. She joins the group that calls itself the “Circle of Mothers” — women who understand what it is like for the world to suddenly know your child’s name for the very worst of reasons... I am not a card-carrying member of that Circle of Mothers, but I live with the constant fear that I could be. Most black women do. Heck, most black people do. But our sorrow and umbrage alone won’t shake the bias out of America’s soul.”
•
So let me ask you, readers... what will finally spark enough sorrow & outrage in your soul that you see Wanda’s son in your own? When will we defend other people’s children as if they’re our own? That’s my Mother’s Day prayer. I hope it will be yours. I hope together it can be our rallying cry. No more children’s names. No more. #IRunWithMaud
sophiabush Now, more than ever, it feels like we’re looking for sources of strength. My mom has always been a beacon of both strength and tenderness to me. And in strange times like these, her strength is a North Star. I know that’s true for so many folks out there, whether it’s leadership from moms or mentors. And so today I want to celebrate my momma who, to me, is both! She put in the sweat, and tears, and elbow grease, and laughter to raise me. She always told me I was smart first — before anything else — and capable second! She led by example all of the time, and made so many big lessons feel like exciting adventures! We’ve always been stronger together and even at a distance that’s still true today. Near or far, my mom embodies the kind of icon woman who shows #AllStrengthNoSweat, and she does it with heart. I’m so glad that, alongside my long time partners @SecretDeodorant #SecretDeoPartner, I can celebrate moms and mentors everywhere! 💖 Check my stories for ways to send cards + Secret to mommas and frontline healthcare workers with our team and the folks @feedingamerica! 💖 And as we reflect on their impact, dear readers — whether it’s a mom, a mentor, or a person in your life who mothered you — who are you celebrating this weekend, and what did she teach you? #FeedingAmerica #MothersDay
sophiabush White supremacist terrorism has seen a sharp increase in America in recent years (source @fbi) And white supremacist terrorism is embedded in the roots of this country. It makes us all sick. White folks? We have to make noise and demand change. This task cannot fall on communities of color alone. The cost on black and brown bodies is already too high. #AhmaudArbery was chased down — hunted by a man and his two sons — and shot in broad daylight. He was 25 years old. He was out on his daily run. This family of white supremacists chased him down in their truck and murdered him. It’s on video — DO NOT SHARE IT, and you shouldn’t have to watch it to be outraged at the execution of a human being — and @govkemp and the Georgia DA have not charged his murderers because of their connection to law enforcement. That is an affront to both Americans and to civil servants everywhere. This man was executed. His murderers must be brought to justice. Say his name. Light up the phones. Spend your privilege. Governor Kemp’s office phone number: (404) 656-1776. Let him know that, as a nation, we are watching. Let him know that we demand justice. Let him know we won’t give up. Advocate for this man and his family the way you would pray that people might advocate for you if this happened to you. #JusticeForAhmaud

sophiabush March 4th is Brooke Davis’ birthday. Sweet folks always tell me they’re her number one fan, and I gotta say ... I think I am, y’all. But you can certainly vie for 2nd 😘 HBD, Queen B. You changed my life. #OTHfam

I washed my hair for this. Which oddly felt like an accomplishment. It also felt so strange to stand in front of my bathroom mirror for longer than the time it takes to either brush my hair or my teeth, as I haven’t done that in nearly a month. I had forgotten what I look like with makeup on... but when one of your best friends is both your isolation human and a talented artist, you put on the eyeliner so she can continue her work. I’ve been so amazed by the creativity people are managing to put out into the world, though our physical connections are suspended. And I’m grateful that one of those creatives is here with me. I’m still grappling with what I can make from home. How I can contribute. Perhaps it’s the live chats, like interviewing @jessicamalatyrivera on COVID two weeks ago, or sister @glennondoyle (today at 4pm PST) on making a life you love. Perhaps it’s all the medical books I’m devouring to prep for #GoodSam (whenever we get to go back to work). Perhaps it’s fundraising for @frontlinefoods. Perhaps it’s listening to my body, deeply and patiently, for the first time in a long time and taking naps. Perhaps it’s just washing my hair so Sam can flex her portraiture muscles. Maybe just that, for one day. Maybe the lesson is to slow down and really let each thing we do feel like enough. Perhaps it’s the little things ... #isopodthoughts
