quincydjones It’s hard to know what to say because I’ve been dealing with racism my entire life. That said, it’s rearing its ugly head right now & by God it’s time to deal with it once & for all. My team & I stand for justice. Conversations will be had & action will be taken. #THESHOWMUSTBEPAUSED
quincydjones Man, I’ll never forget this moment because it marked the 1st time Miles Davis had played this music live (I’m talking’ about the magic he made with the arranger, Gil Evans, on “Sketches of Spain” & “Porgy and Bess”) since he had originally recorded it in the late 50s. Up until that point, he refused to look back, because his musical philosophy was all about moving forward…but after my dear brother Claude Nobs (the founder of @montreuxjazzfestival) & I sat & talked with Miles in his apartment in NY, about how much this music needed to be played live, he agreed. Conducting Gil’s orchestrations for Miles at Montreux in ’91 was one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. From looking up to Miles when I was just a rugrat, to being able to perform with him live was an absolute gift…We wound up winning the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance Grammy on “Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux” & little did I know, the day this photo was taken would be our last performance together…He passed away 3 months later. This year will be the 1st time in its history that MJF won’t be taking place, understandably due to the circumstances, but maan, I know Miles’s music & spirit is still kickin’ it in that beautiful city & every other corner of this planet. Happy Birthday Miles!!…The one whose wit can’t be outwit!!
quincydjones My dear Gloria…Our dear Gloria. There’s absolutely nothing I could possibly say to accurately sum up just how much you meant to me & our entire family, but I will do my best to share a few words about your endless love & light. You came into my family as the beloved wife to my little brother, Lloyd, over 60 years ago, & the mother to your beloved Marlon. Lloyd was my best friend & I was forever convinced that NO ONE would ever be good enough for him…until you came along. I watched you, for years, selflessly dedicate your life to bettering his. He & I had a lot of trauma growing up in the environments that we did, but you not only knew how to handle it, you knew how to replace it with love. You were his everything, & after he passed in ’98, I didn’t know what to do. He was MY everything. When I thought my life was falling apart, you came in without me having to ask, moved into my home & helped patch up the holes…In my heart, my daily operations, & my family. You were our angel sent from above.
I’ll never forget when Lloyd showed me 3 tall file cabinets filled with everything I’d ever done up until his passing. He kept everything…My 1st recordings, my 1st scores, you name it. It was his way of showing that he was proud of me, & after he left (once again, without me asking) you continued that project & have since kept & organized everything I’ve done. The lengths you two went to demonstrate your love were unparalleled, & I mean it when I say I would not be who I am today without you both. When Lloyd was dying of cancer, you did your best to hide your tears from him…& when you were dying of cancer, I did my best to hide my tears from you. Not a day of my life passes that I don’t miss Daddy & Lloyd…& now you, but I do feel comforted knowing that you are reunited with your true love…our Lloyd. I love U so much, my sister, GG…Your light will fill this house forever. I can never say thank you enough…We love you.
quincydjones In honor of what would’ve been the great Joe Louis’s birthday today…I’ve got a funny story for y’awl…When I was a rugrat, livin’ in the Southside of Chicago, my father became friends with Joe & his wife when they lived in the Rosenwald Apt across the hall from us. One day, Joe gave Daddy a pair of his boxing gloves after a major fight, & while my dad was at work, I took those gloves & traded them for a BB rifle with a kid who lived down the street. When Daddy came home from work, my little brother Lloyd ratted me out & said, “Daddy, Dewey’s got a pistol.” When my father learned that I traded his boxing gloves, man…he took off his belt so fast & tore my assUP! Only then did I realize why Joe’s boxing gloves were so important ((:0))…Joe was an absolute heavyweight in the ring & in LIFE…He always looked after us, & he actually got his sister-in-law to become one of our babysitters before that little incident…& don’t worry, Daddy got his gloves back…\(^o^)/…Big-time love & props, Mr. Louis!

quincydjones Absolutely heartbroken this morning at hearing the news of the passing of my brother & friend, the great Little Richard. From our connection through our mutual mentor, Bumps Blackwell, to recording “Money Is” & “Do It To It” for the $ soundtrack (link 👆🏾), to doin’ the hang-thang at countless awards shows & industry events, every moment spent in Richard’s company was a thrill. An innovator who’s influence spans America’s musical diaspora from Gospel, the Blues & R&B, to Rock & Roll, & Hip-Hop, there will never, ever, ever, be another Little Richard...God Bless you Richard…May your soul Rest In Peace.
quincydjones “Give Me the Night” by @georgebensonofficial was the debut project we put out on my record label, Qwest, back in 1980, so it absolutely made my soul smile to have George on this show with us to perform it again in 2017 at @jazzopen_stuttgart...Big-time props to @qwest.tv for capturing the memory & live-streaming it right NOW! Joined by @deedeebridgewater, @jacobcollier, @julesbuckleymusic...you name it!! The best of the BEST!...U can watch it today (4/24/20) by heading over to the link in my bio...Hope y’awl enjoy!! quincydjones My heart breaks…For the Bryants…For the Altobellis…For the Mausers…For the Chesters…For the Zobayans…For everyone. No words of comfort are sufficient in a time like this, so I’m not even going to try…Instead, I want to thank you, my brother Kobe. Thank you for being an absolutely beautiful human being, on & off the court. Thank you for being a role model to all the young rugrats out there. Thank you for being a light & sharing your many gifts with the world. The name of the game will never be the same without you, but there’s no doubt that your incredible legacy will stand the test of time. The love you had for your girls was so apparent, & as a father of 6 girls, I know that bond is like NO other…Unbreakable & absolutely unshakeable. We love you, your family, & every life that was taken all too soon…💔
quincydjones Big-time love & props to all 500,000 of U Instagram peeps for doin’ the “hang-thang”! You must be holdin’ on for some reason…Is it my good looks?? The no hair, the bow legged look, or the “swag” I’ve perfected over the past 85 years? ((:0)) I’m just messin’ with U. But in all sincerity…THANK-Q for the love & support!!!...\(^o^)/

quincydjones It’s weird to turn 87 feelin’ like I’m 35! Who knew what no alcohol & treating your body well could do ((:0))... Let’s take care of what we have while we have it & spread love instead of hate, especially during times (like this one!!) that test our humanity. We’ve all been put on this planet for a reason & there’s no use spending the minutes we have creating enemies. The only choices we have are either to fight or unite, & please hear me when I say, the ONLY answer is to UNITE!!...Thank-Q for all of the B.E.A.U.tiful birthday messages! Big-time ❤️ & props \(^o^)/ ...& stay safe out there!
quincydjones My sweet Doonkie… @rashidajones. Happy, Happy Birthday honey!!…I’ll never ever forget the 1st time you smiled at me, & when I look at you now, it’s evident that you & your sister still hold your mother’s beautiful smile & light. There’s absolutely no doubt it’s been a rough year, but I hope you know that our collective parental love for you isn’t restricted by the boundaries of any physical form. All my ❤️ to you (& all my rugrats), my car & life buddy, today & every day…Happy bday…xxoo…

quincydjones Man…THIS is what you call family!! I can’t believe they all got up so early for me! ((:0))…Anyway, today was TRULY a special day, because I had the incredible honor of becoming the 1st composer to have his or her hand & footprints enshrined at The Chinese Theatre. I’ll never forget living in Seattle at 410 22nd Ave., & one of my best friends, Charlie Taylor (C.T.) lived just a few blocks away at 153 18th Ave. We used to meet up, spend our last 11 cents to go see a movie at the local theater, & every time, I’d say “C.T. I’m gonna write music for the movies one day.” So, I studied it all, because I loved it & knew the house sounds of every major studio like the back of my hand…I’m talkin’ about Al Newman at Fox, Victor Young at Paramount, Stanley Wilson at R.K.O…you name it. At that time, it was just a dream I had as a young kid, but then the great Sidney Lumet believed in me & gave me a chance to score my first American film, “The Pawnbroker”, in 1963, after having received countless rejections from other filmmakers because I was a “black man.” So, having my hand & footprints cemented next to many of my friends & idols I’ve looked up to, was more than I could’ve ever dreamed of. As the first composer, I want to say that I share this recognition with all of my fellow composers, dear friends, family, & colleagues, both past & present, who have helped me get here today. I’m talking about Henry Mancini, Nadia Boulanger, Benny Carter, Maya Angelou, Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, Lalo Schifrin, John Williams, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Sydney Pollack, Richard Brooks, Norman Jewison, Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg, & everyone else I’ve had the honor of working with…U know who U are. And, to all the rugrats out there…I want to personally tell you right now, that if you can see it, you can BE it! You will 100% run into obstacles along the way, but all that means you gotta do, is jump over ‘em & hightail it on down the road U want to go. So, from the bottom of my heart & soul, I want to say…THANK-Q!!
quincydjones Now that my @netflix doc is out & you know a bit more about my journey, I truly hope that my story inspires you to live a bit more, understand that you can truly make a difference on this planet, & figure out what’s really important to you. Prioritize what matters because it’s easy to get caught up in the trenches of life & miss the moments that make it all worth it...We may never get it 100% right, but as long as you wake up better than you were when you went to sleep, I think you’re doin’ just fine...YOLO-SO-KOKO (You Only Live Once, So Keep On Keepin’ On!)...((:0))...xxoo
