nikkireed To say I am angry, sad, furious, confused and disgusted doesn’t scratch the surface. To say those officers, if we should even call them that, deserve to be accused of murder is not enough. Those are just words. I need to go deeper. I need to crack open my own learning and unlearning. We need to start educating ourselves, our children our communities and each other on the injustice that very much exists everywhere, and holding ourselves accountable. Starting with me. I promise to read more, to watch more, to listen better, and to show up. I promise to vote with this in the forefront of my mind, to talk about this around the dinner table, to do better...to be a better human. I promise to use my platform or donate my platforms to share other people’s stories. I promise to speak up, and to admit what I don’t know. I promise to ask questions. I will be continuing to educate myself by researching organizations, donating money/energy/time, by listening and hearing, and more. I don’t have all the right words but I promise I now see that optimism and oblivion don’t change the world. Being colorblind doesn’t change the world. Silence doesn’t change the world. Showing up for each other...we have to show up. Now. #georgefloyd #ahmaudarbery #breonnataylor #tamirrice #ericgarner #oscargrant #philandocastile #trayvonmartin #samueldubose #sandrabland #walterscott #terrencecrutcher

nikkireed Whatever. I’m the girl who posts photos of bread now and I’m cool with it. Because this bread is the best damn bread in the world PLUS I happened to have my camera on my body doing product photography for Bayou SO it deserves a pic AND it only has three ingredients AND I’m not a baker but I can do it so you can too. Also, started that sentence with “because” and I’m cool w that too. So here ya go! RAW Buckwheat groats (not toasted), WATER AND SALT. Cover two cups groats in water. Let it sit for 12 hours. Drain gooey water and blend groats with one cup water and 1 Tbs sea salt. Let it sit for 12 hours. Grease loaf pan w coconut oil and sesame seeds. Bake for 1 hour at 350. Batter will smell kind of stinky and that’s OK! BOOM😋 OG recipe inspired by my girls at @womens_heritage , plates/cups hand made by my girl @earthandelement . (Support local business :)!)

nikkireed Ooph Glennon, yes. You pulled this right out of my body. “Be brave tonight!”⠀ ⠀ “We tell our children that brave means feeling afraid and doing it anyway, but is this the definition we want them to carry as they grow older? ⠀ Brave does not mean feeling afraid and doing it anyway. Brave means living from the inside out. Brave means, in every uncertain moment, turning inward, feeling for the knowing, and speaking it out loud. Since the knowing is specific, personal, and ever-changing, so is brave. Whether you are brave or not cannot be judged by people on the outside. Sometimes being brave requires letting the crowd think you’re a coward. Sometimes being brave means letting everyone down but yourself.” #untamed @glennondoyle

nikkireed Morning! Once a week I donate my social media to a different student from our @yearsofliving @putapriceonit campaign to share personal stories about how climate change has impacted their life, along with what we can do to be a part of the solution. If you feel inspired, dive in with us! I take photos and they write a story in the hopes that somehow through all the IG noise and scroll-through content, it speaks to you. You guys hold the power...your voice will create the change the world needs. If you can, pause long enough to read their stories, and share some of yours too... This week’s BEAUTIFUL story comes from Sharona Shnayder, a senior at Portland State University in Oregon. “Life feels at a stand-still. Like the rocks that form above our waters and in our valleys. Yet in the stillness remains life and beauty beyond measure. Right now we have an opportunity to preserve these immeasurable features of our world, to make it so the joy and light they bring remains sustainable for future generations. When we accept the reality of the climate crisis and hold polluters accountable for their actions these spaces are given a fighting chance. A key way of doing this is by putting a price on carbon. Think of it this way, if we pay to put our trash out on the curb, why should polluters dump into our atmosphere for free? When people hear the word tax they feel like something is being taken away, but what if you knew what you were receiving instead was a future? A lot of us feel powerless to such an intimidating issue as climate change, but what’s at stake is even greater...it’s our entire world. The inaction of failing to pass a carbon tax comes to us at an astronomical cost--our home and its beauty is in our hands, let’s choose to lift it up.”

nikkireed Thank you @voguemagazine for covering our new @bayouwithlove recycled acro-wear , alongside some amazing designers who are taking huge steps to combat fashion waste. As I mentioned when we spoke, we are moving towards our goal of using only plant fibers and fruit dyes for our apparel. We produce in small batches to remain slow and sustainable, while not designing around trends in an effort to create timeless pieces without catering to a collection driven year round calendar. Neutral, trend-less + multifunctional: that is my goal. Regenerative fashion, not just sustainable fashion, that is our new mantra. We are incredibly proud of this first batch, made from 100% recycled materials. While they aren’t biodegradable just yet (see loungewear release this week!), we will be working hard to achieve this with our second round of samples! Thank you Vogue and @emilyfarra for caring about our 🌎. When journalists like you cover what we are doing, you are a huge part of the change we need to see- you bridge the gap by bringing fashion with meaning to your readers... thank you! (@voguerunway Link in stories🤸‍♀️🌱) photo by @acrosprout featuring her other half @moderntarzan -thank you both for continuing to guide me through this practice and for being the cutest couple in the world!!

nikkireed Hoping to re-create this beautiful watercolor set up from last year‘s trip to the desert with my @spell girls, using only items I already have. Hmmm, this should be interesting... any good tips? Thinking I might have to create paint with fruits and veggies, and possibly use old makeup brushes...

nikkireed Making shapes sometime last year...pre-world-falling-apart . Hoping we put it back together thinking about why it collapsed in the first place. Hoping we look deeper than the nuts and bolts, rebuilding with a solid infrastructure, taking our time. If the race is simply to rebuild, but not to examine the collapse, then we are all short term thinkers. Let’s look beyond the building...
