johnmayer For the first time in 152 years, the Memorial Day commemoration next the the Golden Gate Bridge, at the Presidio of San Francisco, almost did not happen. Usually, 2000 people show up to pay their respects to people who died while serving in the military. Like all events this year, the pandemic threatened its continuation.
But today, a group of determined veterans from the @heartandarmor team got permission and collaboration from the VA and Presidio to orchestrate an unpublicized, emotional and socially-distanced ceremony in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, amidst 30,000 headstones.
They laid a wreath for Adrianna Vorderburggen, KIA in 2015 in Bagram. A poem, a moment of silence, and a promise to be there on May 31, 2021. The streak of 152 consecutive annual ceremonies remains alive, as do the memories of all who have served this country.
johnmayer Happy Birthday Stevie Wonder! I’d like to share a story about Stevie with you. Some years back, my friends took me to dinner to celebrate my birthday. On the way in, I saw Stevie sitting at what would end up being a few tables away from me. At the end of dinner, when the cake came out and my table started singing Happy Birthday, I looked over and saw Stevie Wonder singing along. That moment blew me away not just in the kindness he showed from across the room, but as a lesson on the kind of joy that’s possible to share with others when you join in their song. Ever since that day, I have always done what Stevie did for me, and sing along for anyone’s birthday at a restaurant. Stevie, today I sing along with your loved ones on your very special day. ♥️

johnmayer Bill Withers was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. His thinking was so clean, so spotless. He saw the world with such clarity, and could communicate his point of view in the most eloquent, vivid way. Everything I ever heard him say was sage and useful. Bill Withers was good to the world, and he was good for the world. He wrote music as primal and spiritually necessary as psalms. His songs will live forever, and they will continue to make us better, more realized people. Even though he stepped away from the stage years ago, he continued to move and inspire people through his brilliant interactions with them. He will be so missed, and you can be sure that when we can gather again, we will sing out and celebrate him. He will be missed and cherished forever. ❤️
johnmayer Several weeks ago, I was sent an email asking if I wanted to take part in a Mac Miller tribute for a magazine as part of an end-of-year recap. I passed on it, not because I didn’t want to talk more about him, but because I couldn’t; I had shared all the memories I had of him in the brief time of our getting to know one another. I replied to the email and sat in silence for a few minutes. That day, I discovered a new dimension to the sadness of his passing - I wasn’t upset because I knew him well. I was upset because I didn’t. I wish I had more to tell you about Mac Miller. What I do have to remember him by are a couple of beautiful mental photographs that I’ll keep with me the rest of my life.
johnmayer On this day 15 years ago, I helped Steve Jobs introduce GarageBand to the world. Since then, it’s brought music composition and production into the lives of millions of people who might have never had access to it otherwise. Looking back on it, I believe this was a kind of altruism on Steve’s part, offering the app for free on Apple devices and eventually for all. He loved music as much as anything else in his life, and GarageBand was Steve’s way of giving people the tools to discover the music within themselves. I once knew a man who changed the world.
johnmayer This is a photo with @harrystyles in it, and I almost didn’t post it. Like many of you, I keep a close eye on my IG thirst levels. Lately I’ve been noticing that in my attempt to stay socially hydrated, I’m not even asking for photos anymore, let alone sharing them. And I’m here to tell you that’s even less cool than posting that you’re friends with international superstar @harrystyles. So take photos. Make memories with the people in your life. You just don’t have to go posting them that night making a big thing out it. (Say it with me: 📷 @daniel)
johnmayer 1B. Not usually a nut for posting numbers, but this one is special. Something beautiful happened this year, and I felt it every night, on every stage. You have all brought so much depth to these songs. Thank you for singing along for so many years. Sending love from the studio. ♥️ @spotify #spotifywrapped
johnmayer Went out with my dad and brothers tonight for Father’s Day. Dad ate a 25 pound lobster and won a hat. He felt bad about the lobster so we drove him to the ocean, where he threw the hat off a dock. “It probably won’t get to that lobster,” he said, “but it’ll get to one of em.” Then he turned to us and said “let’s go, my head is cold.” Happy Father’s Day, dad. (My brothers helped me write this caption.)
johnmayer Night two at @thegarden was beyond special. We did something I’ve wanted to do for a few years now: play Continuum in its entirety. It proved to be the perfect time and place to do it. These past two nights have been profound. Thank you NYC. (📷 @thomasfalcone)
